Star Nayea

From the very beginning, life would pose a challenge for this strong Native woman and artist. As an infant of two months, Star Nayea was taken away from her Native American birth family, as part of the 1950’s-70’s baby sweep perpetrated by the United States and Canada. Adopted through the Lutheran Social Services of Detroit, Michigan where Star was then placed into an extremely abusive non-native family, and raised in the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan. Luckily at an early age Star was able to escape from that abuse and her adoptive family to begin a life of her own. Survival and music would play a huge part in Star overcoming adversity. To this day, Star Nayea still searches and prays to one day be reunited with her Native
American birth family.
Star Nayea is a 2006 Native GRAMMY and NAMA award recipient for her
contribution to Sacred Ground on Silver Wave records where Star Nayea
recorded and released her version of a remake called Mountain Song, as well as being crowned 2008 NAMA recipient for “Song Writer of the Year” and “Best Independent Recording” in 2001, from Star’s freshman five song EP entitled Somewhere in a Dream. Star Nayea’s brand new full length CD, Silenced my Tongue, has been very well received. Star Nayea was recently garnered with the prestigious honor of “Song Writer of the Year”, at this year’s 10th annual NAMA awards held October 4, 2008, as well as receiving two more awards for “Mainstream Songwriter of the Year”, and “Best Blues Recording” at the First Annual NATIVE-E-AWARDS held September 2008.
